Alter Bridge – Blackbird (Review)

So I’m reviewing Alter Bridge’s ‘Blackbird’ album as part of the MBBTheme of the week‘.

Blackbird is Alter Bridge’s sophomore album, released on 9 October 2007. With the song “Rise Today” as first single released on 30 July 2007.

Here’s the track listing together with their individual ratings (based on my personal opinion & a max rating of 5 stars):

  1. “Ties That Bind” – 3:19
  2. “Comes To Life” – 3:51
  3. “Brand New Start” – 4:54
  4. “Buried Alive” – 4:35
  5. “Coming Home” – 4:19
  6. “Before Tomorrow Comes” – 4:06
  7. “Rise Today” – 4:21
  8. “Blackbird” – 7:58
  9. “One By One” – 4:20
  10. “Watch Over You” – 4:19
  11. “Break Me Down” – 3:56
  12. “White Knuckles” – 4:24
  13. “Wayward One” – 4:47

The album sounds awesome, with heavy distorted riffs, great clean guitar parts, catchy choruses, ear searing guitar solos on the behalf of Myle Kennedy & Mark Tremonti, together with the some double bass drumming from Scott Philips & the groovy bass of Brian Marshall.

The first track “Ties that bind”is truly awesome. It’s a fast paced track, it starts with a low distorted riff and then gets heavy. And it ends with a nice guitar solo. The lyrics are about to be set free (Don’t know from what πŸ˜› ).

Then comes “comes to life”, with a really catchy intro & chorus, followed by a shred guitar solo, in addition to Myle’s awesome vocals. The lyrics are about coming back stronger than before and to stay strong. The lyrics give me the impression it was written against their previous record company, with whom they parted.

The third track which is “Brand New Start” is a real beauty, justifying my rating of 5/5. Its starts with a mellow acoustic intro arpeggio, which is also present in the verses. The solo is very melodic and bluesy at start and ends with a rather fast pace, the lead guitar comes back at the end of the track too. The lyrics is about making a new start (as the title says) and forget the past.

“Buried alive” starts with a fast paced arpeggio instantly followed by an intro melodic solo, the rhythm part is very interesting with squealing guitar sounds & heavy riffs, the main solo appears to be a slide one, and the song ends with an outro solo. The lyrics are about sinking in alcohol to set free from the pains of this world.

“Coming home”& “Before tomorrow comes are the songs a like less. I don’t know what really to say about those songs. LOL

“Rise Today” which is the first single, is one of my favorite. It starts with a fast paced arpeggio probably played on a resonator guitar, then followed by the same arpeggio played over by a clean electric guitar, then kicks in the distorted riffs, which is catchy. The arpeggios are again played here and there in the middle of the song. The song also contains some very catchy slide guitar lead parts (or should i say complete solos) from Myle & Mark. The ending solo, which I considers the main one is what brings the song to life. The lyrical theme is about losing direction.

The self titled track “Blackbird” is very progressive. It starts with a clean part, the vocals are really emotional, its got great riffs that complements well with the singer’s soulful singing. The verses are composed of the same clean part of the intro. It also contains some awesome lead solos in between verses & chorus. And it ends with the same way it started musically. This is the longest song on the album (7:58) The lyrics are about overcoming pain, suffering,…

“One by One” is another great track, I’m still in between rating it 5/4 stars. The intro is really catchy & original, there are fast paced arpeggios in the verses, combined with a catchy riff in the choruses and it ends with the same arpeggios as before. Sorry no solo on this one. The lyrics are about war, certainly about the Iraq invasion by the U.S. It talks about returning those people home and honoring the dead ones. It also refers to the war as a useless sacrifice.

The “Watch over you” track is sort of unique, because half of it is totally composed of clean rhythm parts & some minor leads. In the middle the distortion kicks in together with an overdriven lead. And it ends with the clean rhythm. The lyrics are about parting away for a lover.

“Break Me Down” Starts with a small drum part and distorted guitar. Its followed by clean arpeggios for the verses & distortion on the choruses. The lyrics are about deception.

“White Knuckles” starts with a crazy intro riff, with a combination of distorted riffs & clean arpeggios for the riffs. It also got pulverising vocals. The solo is quite original, having the same style as the intro. The outro is the same crazy stuff as the intro. The lyrics are about holding strong and not giving up.

The final track “Wayward One” starts with a slow speed clean part, with emotionally charged vocals on the verses. The distortion comes in on the choruses. The bridge feature a moderate speed clean part. The outro solo is awesome with the wah wah effect. The lyrics are concerned with the life in ghettos & ‘broken homes and lives’.

That’s it, and I give the album a rating of 4/5 We must note that the singer (Myle) played guitar on this album, both lead & rhythm. Which was not the case for their last album “One Day Remains”. The need for a rhythm guitarist was necessary to provide a base for soloing during live shows.

Enough of reading now, take a look at those clips:
